Leahurst Farm Animal Practice is a teaching practice for veterinary undergraduates at the University of Liverpool. It is a fully functioning veterinary practice, situated on the University of Liverpool’s Leahurst Campus on the Wirral Peninsula.  The majority of work is ambulatory, serving farmers on the Wirral, Cheshire and North Wales. We also have in-patient facilities for adults and youngstock of all the main farm species, strong-links with the equine or small animal departments allow specialist diagnostics and surgery. The practice is in the Department of Livestock and One Health which is responsible for Livestock, Epidemiology and Veterinary Public Health teaching. The department has several research programmes including Animals in Society, Climate & Health, Disease control, Disease surveillance, Epidemiology, Vector-borne diseases, Zoonoses epidemiology and the Global Burden of Animal Disease and One Health. You can find out more about us here.

As a University teaching practice, we aim to provide high standards of clinical service and teaching to ensure our veterinary graduates are the best equipped to excel in their career.

Established in 1881, the University of Liverpool is an internationally renowned Russell Group university recognised for our high-quality teaching and research. We are consistently ranked as one of the best universities both nationally and globally, and the majority of our research is rated world leading or internationally excellent. Find out more here.

We are a close-knit team working alongside colleagues who carry out research and herd health teaching. There are many opportunities to follow varying interests and develop your career. Being in an academic environment means you are surrounded by people who are passionate about their specialties, this means you are never short of a person to discuss cases with.

We have the facilities to thoroughly work cases up to a high standard both in herd health cases and individual cases e.g in the case of a high value animal we can perform advanced diagnostics e.g. CT scan, with advice from surgical experts.

Although we are a relatively small team in the Practice there are all the benefits of working for the University of Liverpool including holidays (we shut over the Christmas break with on-call only  in addition to your holidays so everyone gets time to enjoy time with family and friends), USS pension scheme, enhanced sick pay, staff discounts plus numerous forms of health and wellbeing support. The University of Liverpool is committed to providing an environment that recognises, values, respects, and celebrates people’s differences and strengths. Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) are at the heart of all we do. Working together, as a community, we will create an even more inclusive culture, which aims to maximise the potential of our staff and students.
